The Caroni distillery has a rich history of rum production in Trinidad. While some say it was founded in 1918, historical records point to distilling happening there even earlier in the 20th century. Caroni became part of the Tate & Lyle company in 1936, who used it to expand their sugar operations on the island. The distillery's famous high-ester "Heavy" rums were a key component of British Navy rations, lending their signature flavor. Unfortunately, with the decline of Trinidad's sugar industry, rum producers like Caroni became increasingly reliant on imported molasses, making distilling less cost-effective. After Tate & Lyle sold a majority stake to the Trinidadian government in 1970, Caroni was fully nationalized by 1975. Despite being self-sufficient in molasses, the state-owned Caroni Ltd continued losing money for 25 years until the government tried to privatize it in 2003.
Angostura was interested in buying Caroni but a dispute over the valuation of its aged rum stocks scuttled the deal. Caroni ended up closing down that year. Angostura still acquired most of Caroni's 18,000 barrels of aged rum, but the most prized allocation went to Italian distributors Velier. In 2004, Velier's renowned CEO Luca Gargano happened upon the shuttered distillery during a photo shoot in Trinidad, brokering a rum stock deal in 2005. That pivotal year, Velier released the first of its legendary Caroni bottlings, alongside influential cask strength collaborations with Demerara Distillers Ltd.
This 1998 vintage Caroni was bottled at 16 years old in 2014 as Velier's 32nd release, one of only 2750 bottles. The full proof rum exemplifies the distillery's iconic high-ester "Heavy" style that makes Caroni so coveted among collectors today.
