Caol Ila distillery was established in 1846 by Hector Henderson and later acquired by Bulloch Lade a little over a decade after its inception. In 1927, Bulloch Lade merged with DCL (now Diageo), which currently oversees the distillery. The original Caol Ila site was demolished in 1972 and replaced by a new facility in 1974, marking a significant chapter in its history as the largest producer of single malt on the Isle of Islay.
Despite its role in popular blends like Johnnie Walker, Caol Ila's single malt brand disappeared under United Distillers. It wasn't until 2002 that the 12-year-old expression was reintroduced by Diageo. The old version of the 12-year-old, featured here, was initially introduced by Bulloch Lade under license from DCL in the 1970s. This bottling represents the final days of Caol Ila's single malt brand under United Distillers, as it was later bottled under the Flora & Fauna banner in 1991.
